20/04/2009 - NWS Wessex Group Meeting Sunday 17th May 2009 in Bristol

The Lincombe Barn Wargaming Society has a table top sale between 10.30- 1.00 and after that the tables will be pushed back and I will be running a Fletcher Pratt Naval game for all comers. So if you are in the area and fancy playing a naval game on that day, let me know or just turn up on the day. The sale is also worth attending; it resembles a wargaming carboot sale with potentially anything up for sale.

Further details can be found at:

 http://www.bristolwargaming.co.uk/table_top_sale.html

The Lincombe Barn tabletop sale is well worth attending. The way it works is that visitors can rent a table for a small fee and take a long whatever they have in their games rooms that they would like to sell off. Think of it as an enormous bring and buy” sale, but where the sale consists of lots of individual tables run by the people owning the stuff. I’ve been a long a few times and have often picked up some serious bargains! The sale takes place at the Lincombe Barn centre. More details on the location and the Bristol Wargames club can be found here (including directions):

http://www.bristolwargaming.co.uk/

For those of you looking at the map, the centre is actually on the opposite side of the road shown, in the southern corner of Amberly Road and Overndale Road

If you would like more information on the tabletop sale please drop the organiser a line:

17/12/08 - Arctic Convoy Games on BELFAST: The Naval Wargames Society (UK) will be running a wargame on HMS Belfast later this month. The game will be run by Simon Stokes and will use Mal Wright's new  WW2 Naval Convoy rules , which are due for release by Clash of Arms in 2009.   JW-51B convoy to Russia. The game will be run as part of the "Arctic Convoys event being held on board HMS Belfast on Sunday 28th and Monday 29th December (for more details see this link to IWM web site http://hmsbelfast.iwm.org.uk/server/show/conEvent.1885).  The game will be located in the ships company dinning room.  The Battle of the Barents Sea took place during WW2 when German surface vessels intercepted the British convoy JW 51B North of Norway bound for North Russia.  On New Year's Eve 1942, four British destroyers fought off a massive German attack on the convoy by the pocket battleship "Lutzow", heavy cruiser "Hipper" and six destroyers. Not one merchant ship was lost, and Hitler's fury at this failure almost spelled the end of the German surface fleet. Churchill later wrote that the action ended the German dream of another High Seas Fleet.  The game presented maps the passage of JW51B through the Barents Sea and by the use of dice, tape measure, a set of rules and ship models re-creates the effects of weather, mishap, U-Boat attack and subsequently the attacks by the German heavy units on the convoy.  Can the modern day gamers do as well as their real life historical counterparts, or will they be reaching for their life belts?  The ships address is : HMS BELFAST  Morgan's Lane  Tooley Street  London SE1 2JH   Directions are available at the IWM web site and the ship opens to the public at 10:00 and closes at 17:00 with the last admission at 16:15.  Admission rates are as follows:  Adult:  £10.30 Unemployed (in receipt of benefits; must have proof of entitlement)  £6.20 Children (under 16): FREE Senior citizens: £7.20 Students: £7.20. If anyone wants to join the NWS team on one or both days to help run the game then they should contact Simon Stokes before 21st December.  NWS helpers don't pay admission to the ship and get to sleep over on board on the 28th if they wish.

23/02/2008 - New VAS Versions Announced - Mongoose Publishing has announced two new versions of their popular "Victory at Sea" miniatures rules. The first is "Age of Dreadnoughts" which is being written by yours struly. The second is "Modern Age" (a working title). Both are expected later this year.

20/02/2008 - New Subscription Begins - The 2008/09 subscription period for NWS membership and subscription to Battlefleet has now opened. Follow the "Join NWS" link to the eft, or the "Subscribe" link below for details, including news on the new E-Subscription.

03/01/2008 - E-Subscriptions coming in 2008. The NWS moves closer to the 21st century later this year with the introduction of E-Subscriptions. Starting with the first issue of the next subscription period "Battlefleet" will be available to subscribing members as a PDF file. E-subscriptions will be offered at lower rates than "hard copy" subscriptions. More details available as and when the facility is up and running.

31/12/2007 - New Webmaster! - After a long hiatus the website has a new webmaster. David Manley has taken over from Bill Madison who steps down after 3 years at the helm. David will be taking a few weeks to get to grips with how the site is put together and how things work, so updates will be gradual for a while. In the meantime if you have anything that you think is worth adding to the site please don't hesitate to contact David.
